7 reasons NOT to try Zumba this year

Melody leads a Zumba class in Vancouver, Washington.
1. People get obsessed. First you’re hesitantly trying a Zumba class, then you’re doing several classes a week, attending community events, buying clothes emblazoned with the logo, and proclaiming your Zumba love from the rooftops. What is this, a cult or something? Apathy is way less tiring.

2. It’s not solitary. Good luck standing in the back, getting your workout done, and going home without speaking to anybody. This dance party emboldens even the most introverted to hug total strangers! Yikes!

3. Your body will betray your expectations. So much for your reliable tight hips and immobile torso; after a few Zumba classes you find yourself shimmying in the grocery store, trying out bellydance videos, and starring in the local salsa night.

via GIPHY

4. Your clothes won’t fit anymore. Start saving now, because you may just find yourself a little leaner soon.

via GIPHY

5. Music won’t be the same. You may find yourself doing car-eography to top radio hits, or maybe you’ll even seek out so many Latin, African, Indian (etc.) tunes that YouTube starts serving you commercials in another language.

via GIPHY

6. Explosions of color may start appearing in your wardrobe. The standard body camouflage of black and gray eventually gives way to lime green and bright pink and tassels and bells and metallic stripes, and you might not even notice it’s happening!

via GIPHY

7. Worst of all, it’ll make you feel so ridiculously happy. You’ll look back at all those years without Zumba and wonder what you were thinking! No one needs that kind of regret in their life.

Dawn, I think most people feel this way at the start! If you are kind to yourself and set only the goal of having fun, you can't go wrong (literally). No matter if you're going the opposite direction or can't figure out the footwork; if you just keep moving and don't worry about how you look, you can't beat Zumba for sheer joy.

You can also check out Zumba Gold if you're newer to exercise or have injuries to consider; it's slower and easier on the joints. :)

I have never heard of Zumba Gold. I have always wanted to try Zumba but was worried I could not keep up. I have bad knees and they slow me down. How do I find a Zumba Gold?

Zumba Gold may be just the thing! The "find a class" function on Zumba.com is pretty robust; there will be checkboxes for you to select that Zumba Gold is what you're searching for (and you simply type in the city/state in the search field).

One caveat: some instructors aren't great at keeping their class listings up to date, so it would be a good idea to email or call the instructor/facility to verify that the class is still held at the time listed. I hope you find one that works for you!

Put your worries in the wind friend! Zumba is a judge free zone because everyone is focused with laughing and smiling at themselves. Let your guard down and just let the music move you!

Zumba changed my life! My 50th birthday present to myself was to become certified to teach. I've been at it for a few years and I tell my classes that "there is no right or wrong in this class. Move at your own pace, let the music move you, DON'T THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING, and leave your inhibitions outside!" I promise, once that music gets hold of you, you'll never look back! Best of luck to you!

It's a party baby! These people are my family. I know everyone's name. Started 2 years ago @ age 66 when I retired. I go now 7 days a week. Look and feel better and yes, learned a new language, and have more color in my wardrobe. Don't let your age stop you. Front a front row, Diva

I think it is six years since I started doing Zumba !!
I usually go to three classes a week !!
It brought down my blood pressure and stopped my ankles from swelling - but more than that - I love it so much !! Every day would be so good !!!
